Leafy Treetop Leather: Custom Leather Cuffs and Leather Drop Earrings

Leather Wrap Bracelet with Ring

DIY leather projects have popped up on my blog since I started it so many years ago.  You can find tutorials for my leather bows, coiled leather cuffs, leather cord keepers, and leather bookmarks, and leather frames (which are still hanging on my fridge).

Black Leather Wrap Bracelet
I fell in love with leather when working with it in a book binding class in college.  I wandered into a leather shop looking for scraps to bind the spine of one of my books, and from that point I have been coming up with my favorite scrap busting leather projects.

During that time I also started selling many of my leather items in local boutiques and craft shows.  It has been about 5 years since I first started selling my leather goods.  I have always held off on listing them online, because making one of a kind goods is labor intensive, and listing them online makes it even more of a hassle.

But, now that my kids are getting a little older, and becoming slightly more independent, I feel like I can finally focus a bit more on the business side of my Etsy shop.  I will now be offering custom sized leather cuffs.  Each cuff will be specially made for you .

Painted Wood Bead and Glitter Necklace

When it comes to accessorizing, I usually keep it pretty simple.  Mostly because I'm cheap and lazy. When my SIL got married at the beginning of the month, I thought maybe I should put myself together a bit.  I was wearing a pretty simple coral maxi dress (which I love), but I thought it could handle a chunky necklace. So I made a simple Wood Bead Necklace, similar to my wood bead bracelet.

I had picked up a variety of wood beads at the craft store a while back, so it I had everything on hand.  Using my acrylic paints for the colored beads, I mixed the perfect shade of coral, and painted the big beads.  For a little bit of shine, I busted out my gold glitter and Mod Podge, I mixed the glitter and medium together, and painted over the beads.  You can get pretty good coverage with the mix, but the mod podge will dull down the glitter a bit.  You can add a second coat for complete coverage.  After the first coats were dry, I added a thin layer of mod podge, and then sprinkled loose glitter over the top. What stuck, stuck, and I shook off any excess glitter.

I then strung the beads on a thin length of lace, and it was done.  Made from everything that I had on hand.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the Craft Trend Post, I loved hearing your thoughts about fads, cozies, mustaches, toilet paper art.  It gave me a good laugh, and made me happy that I'm not the only one with some opinions.

By the way, I don't HATE wreaths, I do like many of them, and would hand them.  I just don't like wreaths that have a bunch of thing glued on them, just for the sake of making a wreath.  I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to my wreath and door decor. Sorry if anyone was offended, I knew that was the point that would be the most controversial.  Thanks again, you made me day.

Because A Girl Has Got To Accessorize

Alright...this post is full of random accessories that don't merit their own post.  So here you have it, a collection of hair pins, hair clips, braided bracelets, and rings. They really are really basic (glue this to that), but they turned out cute, and I'm sharing them anyway.

Hair pins and filigree adjustable rings topped with flat back cabochon, supplies purchased here.

Most of these beauties made their way to the Blackfoot  Gifts Bazaar, but a few accompanied the Apple of My Eye, June Bug, and Gotta Have Faith skirts. (By the way, if you are a SEI local, you should stop by the bazaar on your way to the EISF). There are so many neat things to see.

Although my Go! Baby is intended for fabric, I cut some cardstock flowers using my rose of sharon die.  They made some cute little packaging for the pins and rings.

These shiny little friendship bracelets were made to accompany the Kissing Cousins Skirts that we gave to Clark's cousins. The technique is the same as I used on the Chunky Braided Bracelet.

These little pretties were made for my nieces to wear at my brother's wedding reception.  The flowers are a thick paper-y material.  I found the flowers at Michael's, and loved them.

Simple little projects to add a finishing touch to a handmade skirt or gift.

Olympic Rings Necklace

Oh how I love the Olympics.  Seriously, I love them.  I'm sad that gymnastics is winding down, but so excited to have track and field going full force.

I scrounged up a few rings, jump rings, and leather cord to make myself an Olympic necklace.  Just to show my enthusiasm for the event.  Nothing spectacular, but fun.  I'll surely take it all apart when the games are finished, but for now, I'll wear my rings, and pretend that I'm wearing gold.

PS-I love watching Clark get excited about the events.  What kid can't help but jump off the walls while watching gymnastics, or run laps through the house during track and field.  His nerf gun has become a starting gun, and we've been racing him to bed every night.

What's you're favorite Olympic event?

Easy Ribbon and Bead Bracelet

After my plum colored dress post I received a sweet comment from Dawn suggesting that I add some fun beaded jewelry to my dress to give it a little something extra.  It was a great suggestion, but here's the deal.  I am cheap.  I have a hard time spending money on jewelry.  Also my taste is a bit selective.  I do like some big/chunky jewelry, but not much.  Anyway, I decided that I did need to start dressing myself up a bit.  I was at Joann's late last week and I found that their beads were on sale. I can't resist a sale.  So I picked up some of the least expensive beads that I could find and a few jewelry making basics.  I remembered seeing several bead/ribbon necklaces and bracelets around blogland and decided to try it out for myself.

The bracelet that I made used this pewter colored ribbon and some tiny little beads.  I followed the tutorial here.   It was really pretty simple to make.  I love the color combination.  I added a jewelry clasp to the bracelet so that I could take it on and off, but you could totally make this out of a stretchy cord which would eliminate any need for a clasp.

I strung the extra beads onto some stretch cord to make some simple coordinating bracelets.  I'll probably end up cannibalizing them for a future project, but until then I'll put them to good use.

It is a little baby step into the world of jewelry making and wearing, but it is a step none the less. What do you think?

Don't forget to enter to win the CSN Stores Giftcard Giveaway.  It is still open for a few more days.

I'm linking up here today.

My Faux Faux Belt

A couple of you commented on the belt that I was wearing with my ruffled petal shirt from Monday's post. It is technically a belt , but I kind of fashioned it out of what I had on hand.  I thought that I'd share it with you.  I also have a couple of more in depth (and slightly more belt like tutorials coming).

So I recently made a trip to one of my favorite local Home decor fabric stores.  They have a huge collection of upholstery textiles that I love, love, love.  I was looking through the fabric when I came upon this faux leather fabric.  They were having a sale on faux leather and I instantly came up with a couple of projects that I wanted to try (one being a belt).   Originally I believe that it was being sold for $12.99, but I got it 25% off, and I only bought 1/4 of a yard, so it didn't cost me much at all.  You only need an inch or two depending on the width of the belt that you want. I ended up purchasing some brown and red faux leathers.  I went in on a free swatch Friday, so I picked up a swatch cut (1/8 of a yard) of some faux black leather for free (plenty to make a belt or two).
