Car seat Cover...Can I Gift It If I Don't Like It?

So, I have a friend from church.  I don't know her extremely well, but she is expecting a baby girl at the end of next month.  I'd been planning on making her a gift for the baby, and asked what they wanted.  Her husband told me that she wanted a car seat cover for the baby.  I asked her what colors she liked for girls, and she told me pink and brown. Pink and brown isn't my favorite color combination, and I don't have a large selection of pink or brown fabric.  I had some fun purple and green polka dotted fabric that I LIKED, but I wasn't sure if she would.

I've been making an extra effort to use up the fabric that I have on hand, so I didn't want to go to the store to find pink and brown fabric.  As fate would have it, a different woman from church approached me and asked me if I was interested in some of her fabric.  I gladly accepted, and found this pink and brown (and rainbowed) fabric.  It is not my favorite fabric, but IT WAS pink and brown.  So, I decided to go for it.  I sewed it all up, added some ric-rac and some aqua bows.

I'm hoping that maybe she has a secret love of hearts, and rainbows made out of hearts.  Who knows.  All I know is that I'm almost a little embarrassed to give it to her.  Maybe I should have given it to her on Valentine's day instead of saving it for her baby shower.

So is it as bad as I'm making it out to be?  Have you ever gifted a handmade gift that you didn't like...with the slight hope that the recipient would?

By the way, my sewing machine starting acting wonky on this project.  When I was attaching the bows to the straps I somehow pierced through my bobbin shuttle.  I had to order a new shuttle, so my machine is out of commission for at least a week.  Maybe I'll finally get around to writing up the tutorials I've had cluttering my desktop.

Thanks for reading.

I think it's really cute and you should absolutely give it to her! I think she'd appreciate the gesture and that you used her chosen colours. Lovely!

The fabric is definitely different. But I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. You did a great job sewing it up and I'm sure she'll appreciate it ;)

When I saw it, I absolutely loved it! I think it's very cute, especially for a baby girl. My mom actually picked out some fabric and asked me to make her something with it. I could not stand looking at the fabric the whole time I was sewing (it was a really busy wild black/lime green/hot pink print), but she loved it. I'm getting used to the idea that different people have different tastes, and it's definitely okay to gift things if you don't love it yourself.

I think it is adorable, I am 25 weeks pregnant with a baby girl and those are the colors I like, pink and brown. I don't LOVE hearts but I like them, the rainbows are cute also. I think she will love it because it's different, not something you can buy in the store. You did a great job!!

I really like the bows and the ric rac. It's not really my style either but I don't like pink and brown. I would still use it b/c a car seat cover is so useful. :) I have made things for others that I haven't loved but they've liked them, so I say go for it. You could throw in a little burp cloth or something that's more your style too and maybe you won't feel as bad?

I think it's cute, even though it's not my style either. I'm sure she'll love it. And half of the things I make and gift, I gift because I am not happy enough with them to keep them around :)

It's cute! And very well made, so it will work very well for her! I think you shouldn't worry about the fact that it's not exactly your taste, since the colors are just what she asked for. It was very thoughtful of you to do it pink and brown for her, and to make something yourself in the first place.

I have done it once, a friend asked me to make some burp cloths out of specific fabrics that I thought didn't go together, thought they were downright ugly actually. But I still gave them to her at her shower. She used them and loved them. Guess you never know. Now, I think your car seat cover is cute, go for it and give it to her. :)
