The Rocket Ship Quilt

I have finished my first quilt.  It was quite a feat, even though I dumbed it down about as much as possible.  I chose a simple design, and made the blocks quite large so that I wouldn't have to sew 120 of them.

The quilt is for Clark's new twin bed.  I wanted it to be an oversized quilt, and the finished dimensions are about 80x96.  Each quilt block is 16 inches square. I couldn't find a pattern for the size of quilt that I wanted, so I had to make up my own pattern, but it is directly influenced by Cluck Cluck Sew's Juice Box quilt.

I like the large size of the quilt blocks because I think that it really shows off the fabric.  The fabric is David Walker's Robot line, from Free Spirit Fabrics. I'd picked it up last year on a really good sale, and was excited to put it to use on this quilt.

After finishing this quilt I can't say that I'm eager to make another one.  My machine quilting skills leave much to be desired, but I assume that they would improve with practice.  I also don't know that I have the attention span for quilting.  It was a week and a half process of cutting, piecing, quilting, and binding.  I prefer to wrap up a project in a day or two.  Maybe I'll have to do a crib size quilt if I attempt another one.

I ended up doing a little bit of piecework on the back.  It isn't anything special, just a ten inch band of color to break up the solid cream that I used.

The best thing about the quilt is that Clark loves it.  I love that he's at the age where he likes what I make him.  Today he wore his spider man shirt, and when I was pulling it over his head he started talking about how I made it for him.  Something like a quilt is such a time consuming project, and it is by no means an inexpensive project, so it only becomes worth the effort when it is appreciated.

Quilters out there, I look up to you.  I don't know that I'll ever join the club, but I admire your focus and skill.

As you can tell the quilt really doesn't match Clark's bedroom.  I'll pop in later this week with some wall hanging projects that I've been working on to tie the room together.

Thanks for reading.
