<br /></div>
It's been one year since I decided to take my little side business online. I resisted making the move for several reasons, but the number one being work/family business. I tend to have a bit of difficulty not letting work consume my life, and with little kids at home I know I didn't want that to happen. Having an online shop means that you lose a bit of control over your work schedule. With Etsy, although you can put your shop on vacation mode, and control your inventory, you never know when orders are going to come rushing in. I didn't want to have to spend my life fulfilling orders, and rushing to the post office multiple times a day, but I still wanted to cushion our bank account with a little extra income.<br />

Fortunately, over the past year I feel like I have kind of found my groove. My shop isn't always being pounded with orders, which is how I prefer it. But rather, have been able to have a manageable stream of orders come through. I've taught myself to stick to a schedule, and fill orders (for the most part) in the afternoon during quiet time and pre-school. I also TRY to take weekends off, though I'm not great at it.<br />

I feel like anytime you decide to venture outside of your comfort zone you are allowing yourself to learn and grow. I am not a business expert, and to be honest, that isn't necessarily something I aspire to be. I have, however, learned new skills, and refined old ones. I'm grateful for the small but scary steps that I've taken outside my comfort zone. <br />

Store credit is the best, because you can take your pick of leather cuffs, leather wrap bracelets, or even a pair of ultra light weight leather earrings. So, hop on over, tag a friend, and score some leather goodies for yourself. If leather isn't your thing, start your Christmas shopping early, and find something for a friend.</div>

DIY leather projects have popped up on my blog since I started it so many years ago. I fell in love with leather when working with it in a book binding class in college. I wandered into a leather shop looking for scraps to bind the spine of one of my books, and from that point I have been coming up with my favorite scrap busting leather projects.</div>

During that time I also started selling many of my leather items in local boutiques and craft shows. It has been about 5 years since I first started selling my leather goods. I have always held off on listing them online, because making one of a kind goods is labor intensive, and listing them online makes it even more of a hassle. </div>

<br />
Alright, not everyone will agree with me about dipped strawberries being better than gift cards, but they sure change up the gift giving game. And let's be honest, they are a pretty perfect gift for any occasion, be it Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, or Teacher Appreciation Day. When it comes to teacher appreciation gifts I never really know what a teacher needs. I know that no teacher NEEDS chocolate or strawberries, but I know that indulging in a delicious treat helps calm my nerves, and lets be honest, we are nearing the end of the school year. If kids are going crazy, teachers are too. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_8krmw1kUkCQ7uLfRMzhJay_o47IOeJhNn0Hg58tpnGYr9HHqaaofRJw3KbI350PFEl3TjzRM0PO0sd930QMpF7A2rGALvTUkrc4ORXEiYDociqKqhFbBncgn-LhBrQELMcfpAyDXP6vG/s1600/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_8krmw1kUkCQ7uLfRMzhJay_o47IOeJhNn0Hg58tpnGYr9HHqaaofRJw3KbI350PFEl3TjzRM0PO0sd930QMpF7A2rGALvTUkrc4ORXEiYDociqKqhFbBncgn-LhBrQELMcfpAyDXP6vG/s400/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If I were a really awesome blogger I would have written up teacher appreciation gift ideas in February, but I can't even be considered a blogger at this point. So, I thought I'd just share this for next time, or a last minute Mother's Day gift idea. <br />
<br />

<br />
Chocolate dipped strawberries are easy peasy, so long as you can manage to find some perfectly ripe strawberries, and get your chocolate to a good consistency, they shouldn't give you too much trouble.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhYd3Hr68N4SQ3kKT_X1sZI2GS2Jbyidlb3lr9na0XYLQobeaCP5i9NIkgahR-0j1VR57oERmNS0KF96FSjWu7G84Vfi6NgxP9NmS-LNn2o2oXHNhk0f791-apEj8bJL0HV_FD2jgibaDP/s1600/berry+best.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhYd3Hr68N4SQ3kKT_X1sZI2GS2Jbyidlb3lr9na0XYLQobeaCP5i9NIkgahR-0j1VR57oERmNS0KF96FSjWu7G84Vfi6NgxP9NmS-LNn2o2oXHNhk0f791-apEj8bJL0HV_FD2jgibaDP/s400/berry+best.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So whip up some chocolate dipped strawberries, add a cute little note, and throw them in a berry basket. Done and Done. Last minute gift complete.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, you don't need anything fancy. You can certainly use something fancy: fancy ingredients, fancy tools, fancy wrapping, but a few basic things will do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqPNDOrA7imtDYsJVZxWFMxgB2i3pmnAoISNXnfen6HziGGa0MDvpBYE64F5NAcxg_LLSSFetPSihBXPIQcahKZOiRbvGz9P2wOATF04JCz0r0CjFIjf6RRDF6yHmNfJy1Gk_JSYPVUJoy/s1600/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqPNDOrA7imtDYsJVZxWFMxgB2i3pmnAoISNXnfen6HziGGa0MDvpBYE64F5NAcxg_LLSSFetPSihBXPIQcahKZOiRbvGz9P2wOATF04JCz0r0CjFIjf6RRDF6yHmNfJy1Gk_JSYPVUJoy/s400/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start off by washing your strawberries. Leave the stems intact so that it is easier to dip the berries in the chocolate. Dry your berries thoroughly. I let them dry on a few paper towels, and then pat each one dry before dipping. If you try dipping a wet berry it will repel the chocolate and cause it to clump up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghyBzJB50QHR79Til6KYAufnc8kopWj19l8dvynBoE9VmKiQzNaZEEPnrI41AaqIrmGCtMio7wcFUEfxuEeppCt0yRWJj1zEwgvcCXre3S1afTy0-FrN7KVPx_N8Y6MVrT5kdFyBFkcCaF/s1600/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghyBzJB50QHR79Til6KYAufnc8kopWj19l8dvynBoE9VmKiQzNaZEEPnrI41AaqIrmGCtMio7wcFUEfxuEeppCt0yRWJj1zEwgvcCXre3S1afTy0-FrN7KVPx_N8Y6MVrT5kdFyBFkcCaF/s400/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Melt your chocolate. Now I used the cheapest brand name chocolates I could find (you're welcome teacher), but there are specialty dipping chocolates that you can find in stores that would probably work better. I melted mine in a bowl in the microwave. Start out melting it for 30 seconds, then stir for as long. Stirring will really help speed up the melting process, and ensure that the chocolate is heated evenly. If 30 seconds didn't do it, then add 15 seconds and stir again, continue until nice and smooth. Now, I've read several posts that say adding 2 tbs of butter will help make a smoother dipping chocolate. I did that. Guess what happened, it got thick and chunky. So, I broke the rules that my research had given me, and I added a tbs of shortening-magic I tell you. It was smooth and perfectly dippable, without having to reheat. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBJ15fCZADWww5yQSibK1Cz4VR6p35BFDn2IjFdqehf1-s8t_If7EhBUS3bO2ZB4JOPmQXo5jPJ9Rp21dONVAn1lLVjq87vyR9l4-Ae07xOoEUFYozGUMTP5ISvgHAQBPKXemYo2-4CVt/s1600/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBJ15fCZADWww5yQSibK1Cz4VR6p35BFDn2IjFdqehf1-s8t_If7EhBUS3bO2ZB4JOPmQXo5jPJ9Rp21dONVAn1lLVjq87vyR9l4-Ae07xOoEUFYozGUMTP5ISvgHAQBPKXemYo2-4CVt/s400/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once my chocolate was nice and smooth it is time to get dipping. Ideally your dipping bowl will be small but deep, this allows you to dip without as much rolling from side to side. Go down in, pull that bad boy up, and then shake off, or swirl off, the excess. Place on tin foil or waxed paper lined cookie sheets to set up.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjat0na0cngLs6TA0HV_9qQJ6bvsTvUHrHCgmw_cFKkNVmPGIhgPaRckm1AHLcxy66SggTTvuf8vC9kuHLgVx-YfnJJkW3VRl08Zp0UyIByXHoW_wci7ZEEk0ZUEg3_jl023TYu_JvyWybG/s1600/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjat0na0cngLs6TA0HV_9qQJ6bvsTvUHrHCgmw_cFKkNVmPGIhgPaRckm1AHLcxy66SggTTvuf8vC9kuHLgVx-YfnJJkW3VRl08Zp0UyIByXHoW_wci7ZEEk0ZUEg3_jl023TYu_JvyWybG/s400/chocolate+dipped+strawberries+7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the initial dipping process I melted some vanilla chips in the microwave, added them to a ziploc bag with the end snipped off (very small snip), and then drizzled haphazardly over the strawberries. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, move those bad boys to the refrigerator. This allow the chocolate to fully harden, and keeps them out of reach of your children. An hour should be sufficient. Store in a cool location, but not in the fridge. Refrigerating for too long will cause the wax to whiten on the surface of the berries. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiibfI0UVTmcH4nGRe_i9BqUNB_0YrFuqz0unjptPPhb1lUcyuzQ2Z-Aoukp3qjnU-xp5RkOSn3J1dP4oy5iNE4Pf7ycKAEbmWQIn45Sv31WgYRDubERemksXDeNst4trLheTkA6qaI5piv/s1600/berry+basket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiibfI0UVTmcH4nGRe_i9BqUNB_0YrFuqz0unjptPPhb1lUcyuzQ2Z-Aoukp3qjnU-xp5RkOSn3J1dP4oy5iNE4Pf7ycKAEbmWQIn45Sv31WgYRDubERemksXDeNst4trLheTkA6qaI5piv/s400/berry+basket.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next throw them in an adorable berry bowl. I picked this cute little guy up at Dillard's a couple of summers ago. It is the perfect size for berries and grapes. So, even after your giftee has consumed your delicious berries, they will be left with something pretty to remember you by.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ah, how sweet it was of you to make those for them. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's been awhile. The past six months I've been busy sewing, beading, making, and craft fairing; but definitely not blogging. In the past six months we also packed up our first home, and moved across the state to a new home, a new job, and a new neighborhood (that was a given, right?). We are finally starting to settle in, and feel at home in our new area. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmtrxGfbJa0zX0H_HVQOQGIxIV-gaDmJ-ialcW14UNpXRfk66N33o0ejqt_xutfJj4dH7Ozz3q35xWAgIN_aZ4DBxCnknEof4xmzR7CzyQojFW2g__P97gp2y9LDGYVxGz4XFgnVFQzIfW/s1600/aqua+and+lavender+photo+prop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmtrxGfbJa0zX0H_HVQOQGIxIV-gaDmJ-ialcW14UNpXRfk66N33o0ejqt_xutfJj4dH7Ozz3q35xWAgIN_aZ4DBxCnknEof4xmzR7CzyQojFW2g__P97gp2y9LDGYVxGz4XFgnVFQzIfW/s1600/aqua+and+lavender+photo+prop.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since the move I decided it was time to revisit the idea of having an etsy shop. I opened my etsy shop long before I ever started my blog. I actually started my blog as a way to promote my shop. After not much time I realized that my blog had become it's own thing. I enjoyed writing up tutorials, and being able to create a variety of items without having to have a cohesive collection of items. I love to work with different materials, and sew for different people. Made By Me & Shared With You, became a way for me to explore and share all of my creative projects, be they: knit, knotted, stitched, serged, or glued together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhx7WldAjdskmAU1p6uM1JrwsaEN28jHQuVGRVWTFsfQ6Q-NQtkDXTjjBL2aP7nePsfXUCS5Uimq8vu5pEKj1XPYllnf_h-TGSioHkbjn3VLSaiGCeVoQlPftAhvj6alBZTpVNTj_yxlQS/s1600/flower+aqua+necklace+girls.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhx7WldAjdskmAU1p6uM1JrwsaEN28jHQuVGRVWTFsfQ6Q-NQtkDXTjjBL2aP7nePsfXUCS5Uimq8vu5pEKj1XPYllnf_h-TGSioHkbjn3VLSaiGCeVoQlPftAhvj6alBZTpVNTj_yxlQS/s1600/flower+aqua+necklace+girls.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Shortly after starting my blog I then began selling many of my items in brick and mortar boutiques and craft fairs. I love this, but I have done well enough that the demand for my items soon took away from the time I had available for blogging and creating my own items. How sad, and how happy all at the same time. So, when craft fair season rolled around last year I told myself I didn't need to feel obligated to blog, and I didn't. Somehow six months passed. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhokOOrkh3vxFX8B9eC_Azs281xJ7es0i-u2dcbrYlpn-uoBmCjCzbzEQ0lhyWBzO66f91rbcq_UGnNnqY7bcJidCA1siWs3-U_vVSun39vy6VCi_K1AIB7matJBb4rdNTiBdgLdFyElUf3/s1600/peach+and+pink+beaded+gum+ball+necklace+for+girls.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhokOOrkh3vxFX8B9eC_Azs281xJ7es0i-u2dcbrYlpn-uoBmCjCzbzEQ0lhyWBzO66f91rbcq_UGnNnqY7bcJidCA1siWs3-U_vVSun39vy6VCi_K1AIB7matJBb4rdNTiBdgLdFyElUf3/s1600/peach+and+pink+beaded+gum+ball+necklace+for+girls.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now with the move, I feel that I have come full circle. I'm still a part of a couple of boutiques on the East side of Idaho, but now that I'm in Boise, I feel a need to regain my online presence. So, I've stocked my etsy shop with some of my biggest sellers, and have plans to add additional items and stock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPtbKAbFTPUjfy9tLsBgZoMLzCTB3Ft5vrC01RSJClTo9xcm30O-rgbP-HiDTGYyxN2qSbE2k5Gk-p-9X9p6rv-am89bTVoUzepvHXVD5Jiifttj1RlSyObtEiZawUQTdgRb50q639OMeq/s1600/pink+and+yellow+chunky+gum+ball+necklace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPtbKAbFTPUjfy9tLsBgZoMLzCTB3Ft5vrC01RSJClTo9xcm30O-rgbP-HiDTGYyxN2qSbE2k5Gk-p-9X9p6rv-am89bTVoUzepvHXVD5Jiifttj1RlSyObtEiZawUQTdgRb50q639OMeq/s1600/pink+and+yellow+chunky+gum+ball+necklace.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Currently you'll find many of my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/leafytreetop" target="_blank">chunky bubble gum beaded necklaces</a>. They are so fun for girls! Great statement pieces, perfect <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/leafytreetop" target="_blank">photo props</a> for cake smashes, accessories for flower girls, and great for everyday wear. <br />

One of my most popular <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2014/02/free-pattern-and-tutorial-baby-dribble.html" target="_blank">tutorials</a>, not only are these absolutely adorable on little babes, but they are practical as well. So, visit my tutorial and whip some up for your next last minute baby shower gift, or pick one up in the shop.<br />

I hope that along with my return to Etsy, I can revisit the blog. I don't anticipate daily posts, but we'll start with semi-regular posting and see what happens. <br />

<br />
This may be my favorite project of the year. My niece was having her birthday, and I thought she deserved a dress of her own. So, I set out designing an age appropriate semi formal dress. I had this beautiful lace that I bought from <a href="http://Fabric.com/">Fabric.com</a>, and had intended to use for scarves, but it just wasn't the right weight for scarves, so it became a lovely lace overlay for a skater dress.<br />
<br />
The pattern is self drafted, and I used a half circle skirt for the skirt of the dress. I've been hanging onto an oversized lavender zipper, and it was the perfect detail for the back of the dress.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiQn0vSSKLcFFSK8Gxo1rhvdtgMr7fQRWpWjCKpFjM49tnKRPZKdZsEGkoiR0VrJtOnj8fMOzHH3dDSnfX9fys2hM5g8jZZWuBHxZlhFabA4ukwLzCBuwxIauzgazHFpPWyqXZ0YSHUc7h/s1600/skater+dress+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiQn0vSSKLcFFSK8Gxo1rhvdtgMr7fQRWpWjCKpFjM49tnKRPZKdZsEGkoiR0VrJtOnj8fMOzHH3dDSnfX9fys2hM5g8jZZWuBHxZlhFabA4ukwLzCBuwxIauzgazHFpPWyqXZ0YSHUc7h/s1600/skater+dress+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately, I didn't factor in enough seam allowance to account for the structure of the lace. I ended up haven't to make the seam allowances quite a bit larger, which made the bodice quite a bit smaller. Unfortunately, the dress didn't end up fitting my 10 year old niece, but fortunately, she has two younger sisters, and it fit her petite 8 year old sister perfectly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm glad that someone gets to wear it, and I just might have to make myself a matching dress. It's just too cute.</div>

I honestly don't know how time manages to pass so quickly. The past month has been a whirlwind, and I hardly feel like I can keep my feet on the ground. <br />

Amongst other things, my oldest starting kindergarten has thrown our family for a loop. I really didn't think that it would be a hard transition for me, and emotionally, it hasn't been. Half day kindergarten, however, takes over your life. It's going to be a new phase in our family's life, and I am trying to adjust. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8XjfPhyphenhyphenGuPmCfMUxUk28pQBAIKLQJ54b3H6se1bDn22q6SszOrNkRLWdsNZMOv1yciz-Wvvc7U_XFO5M8cRy0X1duP5aAto4Y6P6y92Vpk2fN7ovnqnq2iWq0yMyFXbWUR0LayzsKVoN/s1600/balancing+act+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8XjfPhyphenhyphenGuPmCfMUxUk28pQBAIKLQJ54b3H6se1bDn22q6SszOrNkRLWdsNZMOv1yciz-Wvvc7U_XFO5M8cRy0X1duP5aAto4Y6P6y92Vpk2fN7ovnqnq2iWq0yMyFXbWUR0LayzsKVoN/s1600/balancing+act+3.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been hoping to find a nice structured routine for all of us, and I suppose that it happens a bit naturally. Originally I thought that I'd sew/work while Clark was in class, but so far that hasn't happened. Any and all sewing has been in the early morning, with errands being run during school time. With craft fair season on it's way, I have to find a bit more work time. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibeVoJzQb8R5HJnsCJfrRTb4EVbvjCFhsGAKKVh3ms0Addmwz-wI9iJ5PK5O8k3sMdn61Kv4GFcKIcWmUVYvkY2ybGEB4amjT0mwqr8SvN_jLaleqrErerIYxtDo1-0pOUY6rXWNM96OvL/s1600/balancing+act+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibeVoJzQb8R5HJnsCJfrRTb4EVbvjCFhsGAKKVh3ms0Addmwz-wI9iJ5PK5O8k3sMdn61Kv4GFcKIcWmUVYvkY2ybGEB4amjT0mwqr8SvN_jLaleqrErerIYxtDo1-0pOUY6rXWNM96OvL/s1600/balancing+act+4.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Do you have any suggestions for finding a good work/family life schedule. Balance has always eluded me. The idea of working from home sounds like a dream, right? You're able to work in your pajamas, stay home with your children, and make a little extra money.<br />
<br />
I've come to think that working from home might be the hardest job ever. Having to balance your work and family responsibilities is nearly impossible, not to mention keeping your home in good repair. Sometimes I fear that I'm doing a disservice to my children working from home. I don't want to send the message that they are less important than a project or a deadline. They don't often get my full attention, but instead a frazzled and frantic momma.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBAjkWt_-jbpnil0Z0T2ECt3ndf97-r-B8vrVNkFQYWlENFu6JFg2GEpMTaLl7P6snFFLWZc0Ov8eOUJraiAaC5yb5xqj3IerPNHH1gHdQHfd8tuDZP1Eb2UCJgTkg7GrFAe5IpcGTXlgj/s1600/balancing+act+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBAjkWt_-jbpnil0Z0T2ECt3ndf97-r-B8vrVNkFQYWlENFu6JFg2GEpMTaLl7P6snFFLWZc0Ov8eOUJraiAaC5yb5xqj3IerPNHH1gHdQHfd8tuDZP1Eb2UCJgTkg7GrFAe5IpcGTXlgj/s1600/balancing+act+5.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Like I mentioned, I'm hoping to find a better routine, and a balance, until that happens, posting will continue to be light in these parts. I can't do it all, and I'm trying to admit that to myself, and the harder part, accept it.<br />

Summertime is fading, and to be honest, I'm pretty sad about it. Normally I'm ready to welcome in cooler weather, but this year my oldest will be entering kindergarten. It will be a new phase of life for our family. Our schedules will never be the same.<div>

In an attempt to make the most of the remaining summer, we hopped in the car a few weeks ago, and had a big summer road trip. We started out camping at one of our favorite lakes, and ended up spending some time in the sand and sun in California. With all of the swimming and sunshine, a second suit was in order for August. </div>

I had purchased this adorable swimsuit material about a year and a half ago, and finally put it to use. I absolutely love the little lobsters. The red athletic knit for the rash guard was purchased at Wal-mart of all places. I used a combination of the knit and the swimsuit fabric for the hat. My little Gus and an anything but little head, so having a nice knit on the sides provided the stretch that his head needed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In addition to the Snow White costume, I also sewed up a winter princess costume for our princess meet and greet. We had the very best Elsa and Anna, and they deserved to have something pretty to wear. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHR0HJ6q7_WZ5Eii-dHKPJOqeGG1XoHHhBHDRP4dV6oRi3YMhw41KT9qT2YKDFWmzwYxT-k4ZdkOFBi1gdz3R3c95yMApiQusX3ehwSMdmF-C3BD3ZJeYxa27JG2DqGuosiDZEJ2XIGJL/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHR0HJ6q7_WZ5Eii-dHKPJOqeGG1XoHHhBHDRP4dV6oRi3YMhw41KT9qT2YKDFWmzwYxT-k4ZdkOFBi1gdz3R3c95yMApiQusX3ehwSMdmF-C3BD3ZJeYxa27JG2DqGuosiDZEJ2XIGJL/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+1.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Anna's costume I ended up ordering the aqua blouse online, and that saved me quite a bit of time. The vest and skirt were self drafted patterns. The vest was a bit of an adventure. I've decided that I really need to invest in an adjustable dress form, it would have made the pattern making process much easier. I used black satin, gold double fold bias tape, and iron on flocked vinyl, from <a href="http://www.expressionsvinyl.com/heat-transfer-vinyl.html" target="_blank">Expressions Vinyl</a>, for the vest details. My silhouette cameo saved me so much time, cutting out the intricate designs for me.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSsPkT4l29qvBPN2dwAyQsyq9TQoXAvTZuC57SuBV9-EPlv0nwUPG7IkEIlo6F9tJkwJwpF3W6bXWxX-zu1GtDW-8Y9hV-CWDu-C0rDo3sQIGiM_EiFH2xhNBCoGUANkZLlZZixR1JKzCK/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSsPkT4l29qvBPN2dwAyQsyq9TQoXAvTZuC57SuBV9-EPlv0nwUPG7IkEIlo6F9tJkwJwpF3W6bXWxX-zu1GtDW-8Y9hV-CWDu-C0rDo3sQIGiM_EiFH2xhNBCoGUANkZLlZZixR1JKzCK/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also designed some floral details for the skirt, once again, vinyl and my silhouette did all of the work. You can see that I didn't do the scallop detail on the skirt, I just didn't have it in me. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjhBsJ3UukGqZTcpEkQPOANlxv9ksLBauur8JE0d6aH6VlraCXRNNnIy3zaV1pNi6H8blL_mrLddUVfKSGmjDAR5wFT88sVG_J1sES5Dw2JkpVWb8-O6iDPythUWTWlkSi-vIGWQN19cbc/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjhBsJ3UukGqZTcpEkQPOANlxv9ksLBauur8JE0d6aH6VlraCXRNNnIy3zaV1pNi6H8blL_mrLddUVfKSGmjDAR5wFT88sVG_J1sES5Dw2JkpVWb8-O6iDPythUWTWlkSi-vIGWQN19cbc/s1600/ANNA+COSTUME+3.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Better than the dress, was the princess wearing it. Both "Elsa" and "Anna" did a wonderful job, and were so adorable and sweet. There were lots of star struck little princesses.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I didn't make Elsa's dress, I ordered it. Yep, I broke down and bought a dress. I'd originally planned on making it myself, but after pricing fabric, I just bought it. Her crown, however, was all me. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a little princess party at one of the local boutiques. It was so much fun to play dress up, and take a bit of a break from all of the superheroes and robots that fill my home. To my knowledge, this was the first time that I've ever dressed up as a princess.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLPHFiNEfwUvsOu_ioHqon6h6tU1q8JxoT8L6-muSGY0yldszIAuKN2DfFPeK-2ua0o4WJxITvUJ3AmruFrTd_W82cheiTeKI7DlsPN6SD5ydQMgNZ8gZrXRGHtxEdzZLGRIxlTnECPvF1/s1600/Snow+White+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLPHFiNEfwUvsOu_ioHqon6h6tU1q8JxoT8L6-muSGY0yldszIAuKN2DfFPeK-2ua0o4WJxITvUJ3AmruFrTd_W82cheiTeKI7DlsPN6SD5ydQMgNZ8gZrXRGHtxEdzZLGRIxlTnECPvF1/s1600/Snow+White+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The party was an Elsa and Anna inspired meet and greet, but since I'd be at the party all day, I figured that I should dress up as a princess too. So, in order to avoid purchasing a wig, Snow White was naturally my first choice. After all, I do live with several little men in a small house.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbp3LOxMhPqCCdv3Jv_1abQgp9uydmNSBITdGH4QquZ6ZChO511FC23NiPQcUmEykqyC2-HaVHoabbpzkRf6ASbJ7IRXqmpHUoPvQ8GzEKorQwT53ZIWubZsykCoxrK4U7DtbvH4QIySm/s1600/Snow+White+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbp3LOxMhPqCCdv3Jv_1abQgp9uydmNSBITdGH4QquZ6ZChO511FC23NiPQcUmEykqyC2-HaVHoabbpzkRf6ASbJ7IRXqmpHUoPvQ8GzEKorQwT53ZIWubZsykCoxrK4U7DtbvH4QIySm/s1600/Snow+White+3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The costume was thrown together in a hurry, but came together nicely. I didn't want to have to draft a fitted bodice pattern, so I used a crushed velvet with stretch. The sleeves are satin, and though I wish I'd made them a bit puffier/pouffier, they were fine. I'd thought that I'd cut the pieces with enough extra material for gathering, but, I was wrong. Since it was last minute, there was no recutting/sewing sleeves. I ended up trimming the sleeves with a gold glitter fold over elastic. It was an afterthought, but one of my favorite details.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today we are going to talk tucks...mostly <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666; font-size: large;">pintucks</span></b>. I love pintucks, they are a simple sewing technique that can add an extra special detail to a project. Pintucks can be created with either a sewing machine or a serger, but I must admit, in this case I prefer my sewing machine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, a pintuck is basically a straight stitch sewn on the fold of a fabric, creating a narrow lip. I've used pintucks and tucks on a number of different projects. Here are a few examples: <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2012/03/pintuck-top-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Sunburst Pintuck Top</a>,<a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2012/03/crayon-boxpleat-skirt-tutorial-part-3.htmlhttp://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2012/03/crayon-boxpleat-skirt-tutorial-part-3.html" target="_blank"> Crayon Box Pleat Skirt </a>(waistband), <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2011/05/itty-bitty-remix-at-me-sew-crazy.html" target="_blank">Itty Bitty Remix</a>, and my <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2010/12/hip-for-holidays-im-biased-and-bow-tied.html" target="_blank">pintucked top</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f6b26b; font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: x-large;">Sewing a Pintuck</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-j6Fll-dXkmVIebrC2titZN7pFFeBezUQR7L4xjzeAfZg73RtpZFrUZoKuyEx9NDiHDuoEza0xrnNuBxwV83pxJWI8O13IofDjWICkBnpfP7g1VHIV4iyWaU9-Dr3BGnEYIQaV1kxrPf5/s1600/pintucks+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-j6Fll-dXkmVIebrC2titZN7pFFeBezUQR7L4xjzeAfZg73RtpZFrUZoKuyEx9NDiHDuoEza0xrnNuBxwV83pxJWI8O13IofDjWICkBnpfP7g1VHIV4iyWaU9-Dr3BGnEYIQaV1kxrPf5/s400/pintucks+2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Light to medium weight fabrics are traditionally used with a pintuck technique. For practice, it is helpful if the fabric has a linear print on it. For example, this cotton print has lines running vertically, horizontally, and on the bias. If you want to practice making pintucks, it may help to use a similar fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, you can use a solid, and use a removable marking pen/pencil as a guide, it just involves more measuring and marking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjff6gV1q87SeRIwOFZ65EExp2nTYnVNoF6A31u9EdN63RJCFQZHVUk6vNVVuGBUcjVWY02Lt-kqz4CP3nI87jZ3Vw0OTjfOY7tbdYucmyFFlP1TjRLm_Yv2_qw-YJtwRPicOf1ksjOAEH/s1600/pintucks+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjff6gV1q87SeRIwOFZ65EExp2nTYnVNoF6A31u9EdN63RJCFQZHVUk6vNVVuGBUcjVWY02Lt-kqz4CP3nI87jZ3Vw0OTjfOY7tbdYucmyFFlP1TjRLm_Yv2_qw-YJtwRPicOf1ksjOAEH/s400/pintucks+3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Start by folding your fabric along the desired line or guide. Pressing can make the process easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Place your material under the presser foot, and align the material with your 1/8" presser foot marking. The larger the seam allowance, the bigger the tuck, the smaller the seam allowance, the smaller the tuck. For a pintuck, I don't go any larger than 1/8", and often stick to about 1/10".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
A serged pintuck is nothing more than a narrow rolled hem sewn on the fold of the fabric. The thread is much more visible than when a tuck is created with a sewing machine. <br />
<br />
The technique is the same, but the serger requires specific settings.<br />

My brother 1034d uses the multi-purpose guide foot for creating pintucks. The foot features a plastic guide that can be adjusted left to right to accommodate different widths of tucks. The guide is really helpful in maintaining a straight stitching line.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a look at what the knobs and dials look like all set up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Adjust the guide foot so that the guide sits just to the right of the right needle. Place fabric under the presser foot, with the folded fabric flush with the guide.<br />
<br />
Stitch down the length of the material.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ61VD2qIcQ0sq8kBHzOEWXTVD9kyYgj4qSRMd2p1M4rKkYaC186ykO-5i8eLLZ2MFO9dXXzqDrRt7-fN5jbagLXMqLS2TkMjs3daCuGrFXdl53yab5vrctKzbVvVC7Rnkk9bE3nYCKluT/s1600/pintucks+13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ61VD2qIcQ0sq8kBHzOEWXTVD9kyYgj4qSRMd2p1M4rKkYaC186ykO-5i8eLLZ2MFO9dXXzqDrRt7-fN5jbagLXMqLS2TkMjs3daCuGrFXdl53yab5vrctKzbVvVC7Rnkk9bE3nYCKluT/s400/pintucks+13.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
That's it. The serger requires more set up, but once you've worked out any necessary adjustments to tension, it is really quite simple to do. As I mentioned earlier, I still prefer the look of a standard sewing machine pintuck, but the serger is quite, easy, and works well. Using a coordinating thread will help the stitching lines be less visible.<br />
<br />
Now, aside from these basic techniques, there are a few helpful tools to making pintucks even easier. Pintuck presser feet are available, and paired with a twin needle, pintucking becomes a cinch.<br />

Have you heard of <a href="http://mashabear.com/" target="_blank">Masha and The Bear</a>? I hadn't, not until my cousins asked me to make up a Masha dress for their little daughter's party. <div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Masha's dress is adorably simple. An a-line skirt, and a deep necked bodice made the pattern pretty simple to draft. The hardest part was finding the right trims for the sleeves of the shirt, and the hem of the skirt, which I ended up picking up at Joann's, not perfect matches, but they worked.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As far as materials go, I used a pink suiting fabric for the dress, and a white oxford shirting for the top. </div>

<br />
I think that I mentioned in the last post that I'd been working on a lot of custom project for family and friends, well here's a glimpse of one of those little projects.<br />
<br />
My sweet Mother In Law asked if I'd make her a case/wallet for her new iphone. I've made some basic leather sleeve style cases for ipods, ipads, ect, but I'd never made an official case/wallet hybrid. So this was a bit of an intimidating project for me. I knew that to get this project right there would have to be a lot of prep work: measurements, patterns, proper order and assembly, and then hope and pray that I remembered to add all of the seam allowances, and then of course hope that the phone fit in the wallet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpPiOHFH9ERUjpxAK5eINp20vkK2nMuOsFy5OuyIcMXhQlKxLfiV7jWUgO78w71YRq8rXxv6Lp5-HKm42fEt9912q9gJqz6-J_IasHHSVtxnLevV7kxRKwo7oDXqRNFblJNSey8eEQjF9n/s1600/phone+case+wallet+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpPiOHFH9ERUjpxAK5eINp20vkK2nMuOsFy5OuyIcMXhQlKxLfiV7jWUgO78w71YRq8rXxv6Lp5-HKm42fEt9912q9gJqz6-J_IasHHSVtxnLevV7kxRKwo7oDXqRNFblJNSey8eEQjF9n/s1600/phone+case+wallet+3.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
When I finally got over my trepidation, and sat down to make the case, it wasn't that bad. I ended up making a tri-fold wallet. I added a side zipper pocket for coins, and a small pocket for lip gloss.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnvfFimEu1X0F2uyn1rQ3cF_tvHBJMhimcZZzOf5VHfNqa4hG5nGKDzD_RhZ4sYhhHNWmmD2Fvu4xpI-XK6hYtGd07xPF-h78GKaMZFGPwUbiepuJDcROM4mh02RfubEpfV_iJAJZLpiRX/s1600/phone+case+wallet+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnvfFimEu1X0F2uyn1rQ3cF_tvHBJMhimcZZzOf5VHfNqa4hG5nGKDzD_RhZ4sYhhHNWmmD2Fvu4xpI-XK6hYtGd07xPF-h78GKaMZFGPwUbiepuJDcROM4mh02RfubEpfV_iJAJZLpiRX/s1600/phone+case+wallet+4.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
In the middle there is a leather sleeve for the phone, but the phone also fits in on the side pocket, under the cards.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzsRRdVBTnHl0aj7jNSN76kVkQtIjK9HwOX_62ou0qCE8Mu0xlsQjGb1OMxHCfdP9z4iPJovQAPc5bg9oL2lll2wLe_U6yrN3TkF3bQBfFFplz5mSypb5noJwxH2emgLDwTFisJByL2GlW/s1600/phone+case+wallet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzsRRdVBTnHl0aj7jNSN76kVkQtIjK9HwOX_62ou0qCE8Mu0xlsQjGb1OMxHCfdP9z4iPJovQAPc5bg9oL2lll2wLe_U6yrN3TkF3bQBfFFplz5mSypb5noJwxH2emgLDwTFisJByL2GlW/s1600/phone+case+wallet.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I also added a little leather wristlet, so that she can carry it on her wrists on all of her adventures. I lace and flower were afterthoughts, the pink zipper felt out of place, so I added more of it.<br />
<br />
It's not perfect, and there are things that I'd do differently next time, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the finished product.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3470289277671688195.post-72495329373946219242014-06-13T11:13:00.001-06:002014-06-13T11:13:26.975-06:00A Summer Blessing Outfit<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My sweet nephew was blessed this month. I have yet to meet him, as he lives far away, but I can't wait to kiss his sweet little cheeks. <br />
<br />
His good mom asked me if I'd make him a blessing outfit, and I couldn't say no. Sewing/crafting is one of my love languages, so to be able to make something special for him on his special day, was a great way to show him and his parents my love and support.<br />

I ended up sewing a simple white satin vest with a pocket square, and a matching bow tie. The satin shorts are so sweet. If a baby has thigh rolls, I whole heartedly believe that they should be shown off.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the reasons that I have been a bit MIA lately is the fact that I've been really busy sewing. There's no time for blogging when you're busy sewing, and I've been sewing for a new brick and mortar boutique that I am excited to be a part of. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="tps://www.facebook.com/thecollectiveboutiqueidahofalls" target="_blank">The Collective</a> is a new crafters and artisans boutique located in downtown Idaho Falls. I love the location of the building, and the boutique itself has even more charm. The owners have made sure to only allow handmade goods into their store. It is full of extremely talented local artisans and their creations. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I painted the logo on the chalkboard using gouache paints. Don't paint it too thick, or it will chip. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
As soon as I walked into the store, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I am part of a couple of other local boutiques, but they allow re-sale products and imports in their store. This boutique really celebrates handmade goods, and locally made.<br />
<br />
I threw my display together in a hurry, and was really fortunate to be able to find some thrifted pieces that made my display come together. <br />
<br />
The entertainment center/cabinet doesn't have a lot of charm on it's own, but it is really functional. It was heavy, and I was able to hang some hooks on the side, a trouser hanger that serves as a scarf display, and a sign on the back. There is a sliding shelf, which allows for multi-level display, and I've since opened up the bottom doors, hung a tension rod between them, and now display my onesies on the rod.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I had a couple of really great vintage flannel fabrics that I was able to use as linens. They break up the bold coral pink, and add a bit of feminine flair. My favorite thrifted item is that brown and white polka dotted hat box. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Trouser hanger, not beautiful, but functional.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And of course, I had to have something to display and sell at the shop, so I got to play with some new scarf designs. Love them!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'll be honest, I've never been a huge fan of watermelon. The flavor is fine, but I've never loved the texture. So I was amazed how much I love a good watermelon drink. Agua de Sandia is one of my all time favorite summer drinks, and it is so easy to make. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6tM-SouzcFaSqi1Tc5zkAJAJWRWRt5OY3C7I7wYfKCla9v15vte5fGOy4l_gJrXUIRTGhaU8jUw1DZN3J7ecQ4e8lwzrvATRaVUnMegU20fVfmETEfVU8z9S6rGGAgI_kQAne3zBJ68WE/s1600/agua+de+sandia+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6tM-SouzcFaSqi1Tc5zkAJAJWRWRt5OY3C7I7wYfKCla9v15vte5fGOy4l_gJrXUIRTGhaU8jUw1DZN3J7ecQ4e8lwzrvATRaVUnMegU20fVfmETEfVU8z9S6rGGAgI_kQAne3zBJ68WE/s1600/agua+de+sandia+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
If you have part of a watermelon that needs to be used immediately, this is a great way to use it up. Scoop the watermelon out of the rind using a spoon, or my favorite, an ice cream scoop. Place it in a blender with a bit of sugar (1/4-1/3 Cup) , and 10-14 ice cubes. Blend on high until all of the ice cubes are ground, and enjoy. It's such a refreshing summertime drink. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Agua de Melon (cantaloupe), mango, and pineapple are also delicious. If you have extra drink, throw it in some popsicle molds, and enjoy the next day as a refreshing fruit-sicle.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been a while since I've done a baby update. I like to write these up for myself. I'm not a very dutiful journal keeper, so recording them on the blog is at least some type of written record.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the past month and a half August has hit so many milestones. It makes me a little bit sad to see my little baby becoming more and more independent. He started crawling at about 7 1/2 months, much later than his two brothers, but I was quite pleased that he waited a little while. He's pulling himself up to standing, and loves to be walked around the house. Unfortunately this boys balance doesn't keep up with his eagerness to walk. He has crazy legs, and I think we are still a ways away from independent walking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At 7 1/2 months he cut his first tooth. His second, third, and fourth all cut together on the top. The week following 2,3,and 4, he cut 5,6, and 7. Teeth 6, and 7 aren't visible in the picture, but they have cut through the gums on the bottom. All of those teeth, so close together, makes for a pretty uncomfortable baby. At least he is working his way through the teething process in an efficient manner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At 8 months he figured out how to wave to say bye bye, and learned to clap his chubby little hands. He is so sweet. He loves to play, and smiles easily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He's slid down the charts a bit in the past months. All of this teething has killed his desire to eat. He's weighing in at 23.5 lbs, and is in the 93%. He's 94% for height, and is 100% for head. My boys have had big heads, and I blame their daddy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
His hair is coming in nicely, and is a sweet honey blonde with loose curls. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We sure love our little Gus Gus! We're so glad he's ours.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
When it comes to sewing, one of my least favorite aspects is turning tubes. Small, tight tubes can be especially tedious and frustrating. Today I have a quick trick for you that can help make the process go much faster.<br />
<br />
It is especially helpful if you have multiple tubes to turn, like in this sailor's knot headband I made for my niece.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJkJxKZvqZpQnuL4uBP_aie-gsoiSt-7Oci5ueVe94BTPjgPjBI3IBy_eIMgdm11g6s4BwK50jlv4o_oepk6REvHEU9FYkdCN0f3gEMVHEctZDP2ramoJxOVwApPjuO5Uc4-ZCGoux0AlU/s1600/spaghetti+strap+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJkJxKZvqZpQnuL4uBP_aie-gsoiSt-7Oci5ueVe94BTPjgPjBI3IBy_eIMgdm11g6s4BwK50jlv4o_oepk6REvHEU9FYkdCN0f3gEMVHEctZDP2ramoJxOVwApPjuO5Uc4-ZCGoux0AlU/s1600/spaghetti+strap+7.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, it is a technique that uses an overcast serger. So, if you don't have one, it is just one more reason to add a serger to your wish list.</div>
<br />
<br />
You'll need a serger, and a large eyed needle. That's it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv3MOcDh9iMn0NKQCVWwKp7q7H_ZZQOFCPFQJBtGbcZDku47NBHq-QoATPWQDKQCv43QD_sw-Wl5bneqV_hG-PQ2UOUP6tLnHdVSA-2Hh0MHL0yswf6P98316jYXJkTdk29OPdVadA2yOg/s1600/spaghetti+strap+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv3MOcDh9iMn0NKQCVWwKp7q7H_ZZQOFCPFQJBtGbcZDku47NBHq-QoATPWQDKQCv43QD_sw-Wl5bneqV_hG-PQ2UOUP6tLnHdVSA-2Hh0MHL0yswf6P98316jYXJkTdk29OPdVadA2yOg/s1600/spaghetti+strap+1.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
To sew your tube, you'll serge over the raw edges, with your right sides of your fabric facing each other. You want to make sure that you leave a long chain on the end of your strap. I'd recommend a chain that is at least six inches.<br />
<br />
I used a basic three thread overcast stitch. A four thread would work as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeNVuxkkWBUUbgAbAdyUPocv6uLSvSCEWOXRbT5mbXYgFS7RGCZbO9VLz24Lq8FGBwMPafTpwxMshqARMO1IpiGDeCPnF2YXNsLPMakOAklHqXrfpfDfJ8tjavyweihELv1uSy_4Qi93rv/s1600/spaghetti+strap+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeNVuxkkWBUUbgAbAdyUPocv6uLSvSCEWOXRbT5mbXYgFS7RGCZbO9VLz24Lq8FGBwMPafTpwxMshqARMO1IpiGDeCPnF2YXNsLPMakOAklHqXrfpfDfJ8tjavyweihELv1uSy_4Qi93rv/s1600/spaghetti+strap+2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you've overcast your edges, thread your chain into the eye of your needle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYtlLSITAuuOq1KWcW_hVgpaq8VqoyN1lXQ_fOIenwx-82eiml7DzVw32JbWsGRZpDHaINkn1VGEAMqFLn0tF5lbN-2IvHmu_OJJEz4aYOTXStenFVPMdbyNtFAs9pxTSUObxoWJ5LJwui/s1600/spaghetti+strap+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYtlLSITAuuOq1KWcW_hVgpaq8VqoyN1lXQ_fOIenwx-82eiml7DzVw32JbWsGRZpDHaINkn1VGEAMqFLn0tF5lbN-2IvHmu_OJJEz4aYOTXStenFVPMdbyNtFAs9pxTSUObxoWJ5LJwui/s1600/spaghetti+strap+3.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Insert the needle into the tube (same end as the threaded chain). Feed the needle/chain through the entire length of the strap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNPRh1eo7v0iNZ9a-4kO3qmvBiqkcGG-6t_KqjBWpL0UMTqVJqjicWdnK3jk3SYNDKvbXHUKyCwNNBGH1qJR56TBCVvpFVKEHRbX9551AfTPCierwvJnGCrEtjaN5MS66mbcOr94KGcSpz/s1600/spaghetti+strap+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNPRh1eo7v0iNZ9a-4kO3qmvBiqkcGG-6t_KqjBWpL0UMTqVJqjicWdnK3jk3SYNDKvbXHUKyCwNNBGH1qJR56TBCVvpFVKEHRbX9551AfTPCierwvJnGCrEtjaN5MS66mbcOr94KGcSpz/s1600/spaghetti+strap+5.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As you gently feed the needle/chain through, the tube will turn right side out. Easy as that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's Selfish Sewing Week over at Imagine Gnats, and I decided it was high time I did a bit more sewing for myself. So, I busted out some ITY knit that I've had in my stash, and a couple of my favorite self drafted patterns, and created this super comfortable knit maxi dress. I LOVE it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzWodUymlXCBvH8aVjpnugklgnwvjC_yETeqsmvNmccK1HmbRXX3KcAV8xv77IVPxycO3np0IOzNGkm16JE3ccNb8zy04Jf12wGOXWwu_fsrTxb8Q5PortGI64n1gVcUtSfTnlUqlrwP5/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzWodUymlXCBvH8aVjpnugklgnwvjC_yETeqsmvNmccK1HmbRXX3KcAV8xv77IVPxycO3np0IOzNGkm16JE3ccNb8zy04Jf12wGOXWwu_fsrTxb8Q5PortGI64n1gVcUtSfTnlUqlrwP5/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, you can find the two projects that I combined to make this dress on my blog: The <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2012/10/top-toberfest-easy-as-pie-tank.html" target="_blank">Easy as Pie Tank</a> Pattern was used to draft the neckline and arms, and the <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2010/08/lazy-saturday-t-shirt.html" target="_blank">Lazy Saturday Shirt </a> uses a similar technique to shirr the extra material in the width of the dress. You can find my more information on the shirring technique used, <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2011/04/shirr-thing-for-spring-day-three.html" target="_blank">here </a>and <a href="http://leafytreetopspot.blogspot.com/2011/04/shirr-thing-for-spring-mini-series-day.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Easy As Pie Tank has a dart included in the pattern, I didn't change that. The shirring pulled in the extra material from the dart. Using an existing maxi dress as a guide, I determined how long, and wide I wanted my dress to be, and cut my fabric accordingly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished off the neck and arms using a technique similar to attaching ribbing. The only difference was that my ITY knit didn't have quite as much stretch as my typical ribbed knits, so I used longer strips to finish them off? Lost? I'll have to do a ribbed knit technique tutorial in the future. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpE2eqL19i7OCv1b5YpAl2AWB5sKYWKf3oHTcRa50o1AC6537C82sx5epAruhIGb-4IOZlYBQ5LpzaFZzRIQvVHQVPoWB7_GtdFJcGmr6ShYcMHdAWgQOosYj-kfMkKkTQqPl9uOHtLf8I/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpE2eqL19i7OCv1b5YpAl2AWB5sKYWKf3oHTcRa50o1AC6537C82sx5epAruhIGb-4IOZlYBQ5LpzaFZzRIQvVHQVPoWB7_GtdFJcGmr6ShYcMHdAWgQOosYj-kfMkKkTQqPl9uOHtLf8I/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+1.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The shirring pulls the dress in at the waist, and gives the dress a bit more shape. After sewing up the dress, at the side and shoulder seams, I tried the dress on, and decided where I wanted my first row to start. It was really a sew as you go type project. The important thing to remember is that you don't want your shirred rows to start too high (like my Lazy Saturday Shirt), or the rows will be crawling up your bust.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhszmDm6XpEVkkKMCT_cgvEL7R1A2RowPujoSA78w63_-80XmSYAWgBy3VGcte6w1ElOz8iOsXN_oPVHEzylnZUDN08UsTFE5M3XQoHmIJdZ3EcKI8yv4-23FZfN8jiT2Z7AW4ZMEOLmlT/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhszmDm6XpEVkkKMCT_cgvEL7R1A2RowPujoSA78w63_-80XmSYAWgBy3VGcte6w1ElOz8iOsXN_oPVHEzylnZUDN08UsTFE5M3XQoHmIJdZ3EcKI8yv4-23FZfN8jiT2Z7AW4ZMEOLmlT/s1600/lazy+saturday+maxi+4.jpg" height="640" width="410" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was a super quick sew, and well worth the time and material. I love the finished product. It might be the only selfish sewing project of the week, but I'm happy with it, so that is a win!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3470289277671688195.post-64499113467563346752014-04-18T14:05:00.000-06:002014-04-18T14:05:11.253-06:00Everyday Elsa Tunic and Leggings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My sweet niece Paisley just celebrated her third birthday, and like most three year old girls around the world, she loves Frozen. So an Elsa dress was the obvious choice. But, she's three, and three year olds run around, climb on furniture, and don't really need trains tripping them up while they are playing. So, the Everyday Elsa tunic dress was born. It has a high low hem at the base of the tunic, which references the Elsa train, but eliminates tripping hazards. The chiffon knit that I used for the dress is semi-sheer, and I left the sleeves and the yolk unlined, to one again reference the original dress.</div>

<br />
My sweet niece Kali just had a birthday. I love that I have nieces. It gives me the opportunity to sew for little girls. Kali is a sweet little girl, and has always been called "June Bug" by the family. So this red and black polka dotted ITY knit, seemed like the perfect fabric for our little lady (bug).<br />
<br />
I used my silhouette cameo to design a little personalized t-shirt. I love heat transfer vinyl, and have several projects to show you. In place of the dot above the "I" in her name, I added a little lady bug. I didn't know for sure if an eight year old would be down with lady bugs, but she loved it.<br />

I used some scraps from the knit, and made a sailor's knot headband for her. It was my first attempt at the sailor's knot, and it was fun. I can't wait to make one for myself. I followed this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tiC2qSopMU" target="_blank">Sailor's Knot video tutorial</a> from youtube.<br />
